Introducing our 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo

We’ve been working away at a new project, and we are thrilled to finally let you in on our secret. We have crafted a new wine for our Quin Wines collection… A 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo!

Nebbiolo is originally an Italian variety that both Andrew and I have always had a soft spot for. It’s not commonly planted in Australia as it is needs very precise growing conditions, a lot of love, and a whole lot of skill and precision to produce a great quality wine. Nebbiolo vines generally flower early and produce fruit late, meaning the growing season is longer which can also result in higher risk. It is a variety that most people attribute to be a labour of love, and that’s exactly what our Nebbiolo has been to us!

The fruit for our Nebbiolo is sourced from a north facing slope in Victoria’s Pyrenees, where the vines were planted in 2000. Sitting at an altitude of 350m on a red permeable clay and with cool evening temperatures, this vineyard produces fruit with a high aromatic potential and good natural acidity. We’ve never been one to do things by halves, as this vineyard in Pyrenees was specially picked because it is one of Australia’s most regarded Nebbiolo plantings, and that is clearly represented through the quality of fruit these vines produced.

The fruit was hand harvested, and in true Andrew style, he drove all the way over to pick up the grapes and hand-delivery them back to the Barossa Valley. A true labour of love!

The fruit was then tipped directly into an open top fermenter. After 7 days as 100% whole bunch, the fruit was destemmed and returned back to the original fermenter where it was hand plunged for another five weeks. It was then basket pressed, settled overnight, and racked to seasoned French oak to mature and develop.

The aromatics on this wine are delightful and give you a sense of what is to come… With beautiful aromas of rose petal, macerated berries, cumin and sage that will tantalise the senses as you crack open the bottle.

The palate is intricate and textural, providing an abundance of depth and complexity with each sip. With grippy tannin focused through the middle, we are positive that our Nebbiolo won’t disappoint.

With only 75 cases produced, we set out to make a wine of the highest quality, irrelevant of quantity. And we think we have hit the nail on the head with this one!

Welcome to the Quinner Circle – our 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo.
