Quin Wines 2017 Barossa Valley Shiraz

“Made from fruit grown on the banks of Greenock Creek, this is a typically bold Barossan expression. It is deeply coloured and flavoured but also has great detail and complexity. It is bright, deep ruby and has dense aromatics – blackberry, baked earth, licorice and barbequed meats supported by well-integrated oak. The wine is then dry and quite firm with mouth-coating tannins well-matched with concentrated fruit. The wine is also youthful and immaculately balanced finishing long and even with a touch of elegance. Balance is the key that will see this wine sing for years.”

“Deep, dark, bold purple/red colour. The bouquet is very fresh, young and bold, loaded with dark plum and blackberry. The wine is full-bodied and firm with abundant tannins and black fruit, char-oak flavours, the finish long and firmly-laden with tannin. The tannins are chewy and faintly bitter, but the effect is cleansing on the aftertaste. A big, concentrated shiraz with a future.”
Quin Wines 2018 Barossa Valley Grenache

“A fascinating expression of Barossa Grenache with whole bunch characters matched up with ripe and rich fruits. Deep, dark red in colour, the wine has superb fruit purity and concentration with cranberry and cherry aromas plus touches of earth and spice. It is then dry, full-bodied, youthful and expressive, but also quite firm on the palate with more brooding and savoury fruits, particularly spice and herbs matched up with some sinewy tannins. It is built to last combining fruit power and ample tannins to make a wine that really needs time to show its best. It will be fascinating to see what this wine has to offer over the next decade.”

“It’s very deep and purplish in appearance, with a fruit-driven nose of crushed blackberries, black plums, dried currants and earthy spice. A charred cedary thread of oak doesn’t intrude, seasoning and enhancing rather than dominating. In the mouth, it flows smoothly with mellow, sustained flavours, and fine-grained ripe tannins are folded seamlessly into a lasting finish.”

“Another shiraz that fits into the bloody delicious, medium-weight and pure of fruit category. This one is from the wee Hampton Vineyard on Mengler Hill, 450 metres above sea level on the western boundary of the Eden Valley.
Quin Wines, the brainchild of Skye and Andrew Quin, is an exciting new addition to the Barossa wine scene. Andrew is the head winemaker at the ace Hentley Farm Wines over on the western ridge of the Barossa and the range of wines that he and Skye now produce under their own label are terrific across the board.
Eden Valley wines tend to be a bit finer and high-toned than their revered cousins from down on the valley floor. You’ll find fruit more in the blue spectrum, more floral tones, sometimes sage aromas and a tannin profile that is both compact and kinetic.
By kinetic I mean there is elasticity to the way the tannins present on the palate. They seem to have ‘give’ in the mouth and aren’t merely plinths of structure plummeting through the fruit. I often describe it as akin to walking on a beach and feeling the give of the sand at the water’s edge underfoot; a fleeting impression that fades over time as you look back at your trail.
But enough wine-geekery! All you need to know is it tastes wicked. It is fragrant and perfumed with blossom and jasmine notes hanging over the pure blueberry and red plummy fruits. Plenty of spicy notes, vanilla bean, a lovely bright, spacious mouthfeel with those delightful kinetic tannins. It’s a cracker!”

“Planted high in the Eden Valley at 450m comes this generous and modern example of Eden Valley Shiraz. It is bright and deeply coloured with luscious blackberry jam and licorice fruits plus that Eden Valley hit of earth, violets and spice with reserved oak. It is then dry, fleshy and supple with open-knit tannins that provide good aging potential. The wine radiates with Barossan richness but retains that Eden delicacy and complexity. Great wine that I reckon will gain more layers and interest with time in the cellar.”
Quin Wines 2019 Pyrenees Nebbiolo

“This wine is made from the famous Malakoff region in Victoria’s Pyrenees region. It was planted in 2000 and over the years has been home to many groundbreaking wines. With the fruit Andrew and Skye Quin go for an unusual style – starting as whole bunches then five weeks on skins.
2019 was a hot year and it’s made for a big ripe Nebbiolo style. The fruit is plush and rich – concentrated layers of blackberry and black cherry fruits with a herbal, meaty, spicy edge. The hot year has made for an earlier drinking Nebb with supple tannins and moderate acid. There is plenty of fruit concentration and fruit length too making for a good drink over the short to medium term.”

“Typically pale in true varietal fashion, this Victorain nebbiolo has fragrant cherry, rose petal and foresty aromas. Medium-bodied, it’s savoury and persistent, with a well-measured underpinning of dry, balanced tannins.”

“Medium to full red colour with a tinge of purple, the bouquet herbal with some rose and raspberry nuances beneath. It”s medium-bodied and straightforward in flavour, with moderately light tannins which are nevertheless firm and pointed. I’d cellar it for a year or two.”

“Slaty, almost a touch toasty and a little forward, paraffin waxy, but fresh and alive. Dry but soft, lemony acidity. Trace of tropical fruit. Perhaps just lacks the finesse and delicacy of the ‘17.”

“Lemon essence and fresh almonds, wild honey and ginger nut biscuits – obviously lots going on. A skinsy, phenolic note doesn’t stray into grip or bitterness. It’s advanced though maintains focus; citrus intensity and drive fully intact. Terrific fruit and clever winemaking.”
